As the shadow of the cross loomed, Jesus shared some of His final hours with His closest friends. They sat with Him, unaware of what would happen the next day, and He served them, taught them, and prayed for them. What would it have been like in that quiet upper room, without even a house servant to wash their feet? Did they realize this was not a typical Passover meal? In his book Lessons from the Upper Room: The Heart of the Savior, Sinclair Ferguson explores Jesus’ Farewell Discourse (John 13-17), painting vivid pictures of the intimate moments between Jesus…

After 20 years, the ambitious biblical theme park is closed for good. The dream of a Bible theme park died in Florida last week, after 20 years of innovation and renovation—not to mention cash infusions, cost cuts, and rate hikes—failed to make the Holy Land Experience financially sustainable. The 15-acre park in was once conceived as Christian competition for Walt Disney World. Evangelical visionaries imagined a family entertainment experience that could pull at least a portion of Orlando’s annual visitors from the mouse’s magic kingdom to the kingdom of God. But the reenactments of resurrection, theatrical productions, scale miniature model…

Whether you are a parent, a grandparent, aunt or uncle, or friendly neighbor, you can still gather together for a worship experience. Many churches are pushing pause on gathering their congregants for weekly worship services during this season of coronavirus risk, including children’s ministry classes and groups. While many of us might be tempted to enjoy a break from church, that’s the last thing we really need. At times like this, we desperately need God’s Word to reassure us that He is in control; we need to sing songs that remind us of His power; we need worship. The Bible…

Florida theme park to focus on Bible museum. A Christian-oriented theme park in central Florida that describes itself as "bringing the Bible to life" is laying off most of its workers. The Holy Land Experience last week filed notice with the city of Orlando and state officials announcing it would be eliminating 118 positions. That represents most of the jobs at the theme park in Orlando's tourist corridor. Holy Land Experience officials said in a letter that they were shifting focus from entertainment and theatrical productions to the park's Biblical museum. The decision will allow them to continue to receive…

God works through people and churches who depend on him. I accepted my first pastorate in 2004 at First Baptist Church in Castroville, TX as a 25-year-old recent seminary graduate. I had not given much thought to leading revitalization throughout my studies, but I found myself leading a church that was still in the process of healing from previous hurt. They were suffering dysfunction, and decline. As a new pastor, I did what I thought was best, and that was to thrust myself fully into pastoring by working hard, not being above any task, and doing whatever I thought needed…

“May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” (Ephesians 3:19 NLT). Most of us have sung, “Jesus loves me this I know,” and recited “For God so loved the world,” since we were children. Yet, we don’t experience God’s love. Why is that? We may have been desperately disappointed by people who claim to love us, and now we are skeptical of love–even God’s love. When we look to any other person besides God…
